The Robotics and Agents Research Group at the University of Cape Town has developed a prototype of a small sized Urban Search and Rescue Robot designed to be dropped or thrown into damaged buildings. The robot is designed to be low-cost, so much so that it is considered an expendable tool in the rescue worker’s; arsenal. It can carry interchangeable sensor payloads capable of detecting the signs of life necessary to identify trapped victims in a disaster area.
